By: Anna Cave Class is back in session, and hopefully, we’re in for a more normal semester. With a fresh new school year comes a fresh new set of media analytics majors. Whether you’re an incoming freshman without a declared major or someone already well into your college experience, this site can be a great place to start if you have an interest in the major.
Because Elon is one of the only schools with an undergraduate media analytics program, it can be hard to understand what exactly the major is. I choose to envision the major as one that informs all of the other communications majors. Media analytics deals with a lot of data and metrics that can be used to measure whether or not different forms of communication are successful. Success can be measured in a variety of ways, and media analytics is all about finding the right measurements for your goals. For example, someone doing comedy on a platform like TikTok might care more about getting exposure, so they may choose to measure success in views and likes, while someone running social media for a small business cares about getting traffic to their website that leads to conversions (in this case, purchases). Like I stated above, that is how I like to envision media analytics as it pertains to my specific interests, but media analytics can truly be anything you want it to be. I love the major because it pairs so nicely with everything else in the School of Communications. Communication Design majors can use analytics to decide which design elements are the most effective, while Journalism students can learn what headlines get the most clicks and reads, and same for the other majors. It is a way to measure success on your own so you can become the best communicator possible. Because this major has so much going for it, I created a student-run site to foster a community of analytics students. Everything you see on here is created by students, for students. It offers a more comprehensive look at what you can do with analytics beyond just reading the course descriptions. We post informative articles that make learning about analytics less daunting, as well as resource lists to easily find information elsewhere. If you like what you see, we encourage you to consider pursuing the major or taking a few classes to get comfortable with the concepts. If you feel like getting involved with Acorn Analytics or just have a question you want to be answered, we also encourage you to fill out the contact form so we can connect with you. With that, we leave you to your first week of classes and look forward to growing the site in the coming year!
